Russian has become the second most popular internet language among users of the World Wide Web, head of the Ministry of Communications of the Russian Federation Nikolay Nikiforov announced today while speaking at the international forum "Open Innovations".
"As regards the number of subscribers of broadband access to the Internet, Russia occupies the fifth place in the world and it is at the first place in Europe", Nikiforov said.
"At the same time, the number of Russian-speaking users around the world is so great, that our language is the second most popular on the World Wide Web". In his opinion, this fact creates "positive preconditions for further development of the high-tech economy in our country".
"Today, Russia is open to innovations as never before," the minister adds.
The head of the Ministry of Communications also stressed that the Ministry paid great attention to the development of the information technology industry. He reminded that last week the government had approved the strategy for development of the IT-industry in Russia for 2014-2020 and long term strategy till 2025.
"Today, our industry employs approximately 350 thousand of highly skilled programmers", the Minister noted. "We aim at organizing the work of staff training systems, at supporting scientific research in the IT field, so that their number doubles during the next five years". According to him, "it will affect all sectors of the economy, and provide the basis for innovations in virtually all directions".
